Why I Chose the Name Wairua Jewellery

People often ask me why I chose the name Wairua Jewellery.

In te reo Māori, wairua is often translated as "spirit," but for me, it's much more than a single English word can capture. It speaks to the unseen connections between people, places, our ancestors, and the world around us.

That idea of connection sits at the heart of everything I create.

I believe we're all connected. Whether you see that through spirituality, culture, nature, or simply through our shared humanity, our lives are woven together in ways we don't always recognise.

The world can often feel divided. Every day we're reminded of conflict, hardship, and the things that separate us. But I choose to believe we can do better. I believe that when we remember our connection to one another, we're more likely to act with kindness, compassion, and respect.

For me, that's what wairua represents.

It's also why so much of my jewellery draws inspiration from whakapapa (ancestry) and whenua (land). Our stories don't begin with us—they're shaped by the people who came before us, the places that raised us, and the communities that continue to support us.

When I design a piece, I'm not only thinking about how it looks. I'm thinking about what it represents. A mountain can remind someone of home. A woven pattern can speak of connection. A simple pendant can become a daily reminder of the people and places that matter most.

In te ao Māori, whakapapa, whenua, whānau (family), and wairua are deeply intertwined. Each gives meaning to the others. That understanding has shaped not only the jewellery I make, but also the values behind the brand.

Wairua Jewellery was never intended to be just a name.

It's a reminder that we all belong somewhere, that we all carry stories, and that the things connecting us are far stronger than the things that divide us.

My hope is that every piece I create carries a little of that whakaaro with it—and that whoever wears it feels a sense of connection, whether it's to a place, a memory, a loved one, or simply to themselves.
