Taranaki Maunga Pendant
A pendant inspired by Taranaki Maunga, handcrafted in sterling silver.
Inspired by the enduring story of Aoraki Maunga (Aoraki / Mount Cook) as told by Ngāi Tahu, this sterling silver pendant honours the connection between whenua, whakapapa, and the mountains of Kā Tiritiri o te Moana (the Southern Alps). In Ngāi Tahu tradition, Aoraki was the eldest son of Raki (the Sky Father). Alongside his brothers, Aoraki journeyed from the heavens in Te Waka o Aoraki to visit Papatūānuku (the Earth Mother). When they attempted to return to the sky, their canoe became stranded upon a reef. Over time, Aoraki and his brothers transformed into stone, becoming the towering peaks of Kā Tiritiri o te Moana, with Aoraki standing as the highest of them all. This pendant features a detailed topographic representation of Kā Tiritiri o te Moana and Aoraki, celebrating the landscape and the stories held within it.
