Ruapehu & Tongariro Maunga Pendant
A pendant inspired by Ruapehu and Tongariro Maunga, handcrafted in sterling silver.
Inspired by the pūrākau of Taranaki Maunga (Mount Taranaki), this sterling silver pendant honours the stories, landscapes, and deep connections held within this iconic maunga. According to Māori tradition, Taranaki once stood among the great mountains of the central North Island alongside Tongariro, Ruapehu, and others. After a great conflict over the beautiful Pihanga, Tongariro emerged victorious and Taranaki departed westward, carving the valleys and waterways of the land as he travelled. Eventually stopped by the Pouākai Ranges, Taranaki came to rest in his present location, where he remains today. It is said that when Taranaki is covered in mist and rain, he is mourning for Pihanga. This pendant features a detailed topographic representation of Taranaki Maunga, capturing the unique contours and character of the landscape.
